Ever notice how some of your best conversations happen in the most unexpected places? Yesterday, what started as a routine bike ride turned into a reminder about the power of staying open to possibilities.
A Chance Encounter on Fresh Gravel
I was grinding up a newly graveled climb – you know the kind, where the loose stones make every pedal stroke feel twice as hard – when I met another rider. Instead of the usual “hey, how’s it going?” exchange, we ended up in a two-mile conversation covering everything from business transitions to international ventures, leadership challenges, and even marriage.
This wasn’t just small talk. It turned out he was navigating significant business changes, something I’m passionate about through my Leaders in Transition program. By ride’s end, we’d exchanged numbers and made plans to connect locally.
Why Opening Up Isn’t Opening Yourself to Exploitation
Here’s the thing: I know some people worry that being genuinely open makes you vulnerable to being taken advantage of. But here’s what I’ve learned – if someone does exploit your openness, they’ve just shown you exactly who they are. Those aren’t the people you want in your circle anyway.
This week, someone in my local community mentioned that I’ve developed a reputation for being “open, friendly, fair, and kind.” Those aren’t just nice-to-have qualities – they’re business assets.
Your Next Conversation Could Change Everything
You never know where your next opportunity will come from. That trail conversation could become a business partnership, a valuable connection, or simply a meaningful friendship.
The Monday Challenge
This week, look for one genuine conversation opportunity. Maybe it’s with someone you already know but haven’t really talked to, or perhaps a complete stranger. Don’t bare your soul, but be open to real connection.
Because if you’re constantly guarding against being a “doormat,” you might just end up pretty lonely instead.
