The Myth of Perfect Leadership Conditions
Why waiting for the “perfect moment” is a leadership trap, and how to build a leadership journey designed for all possibilities.
“I’ll lead better, and I’ll be better, when the conditions are right.”
As leaders we can spend so much of our lives waiting for the ideal moment. Waiting for the right budget, the perfect client, the flawless team member, or the ultimate business opportunity.
But constantly waiting for these moments might be a trap.
Let’s break down why waiting for the perfect moment is stalling your leadership, and how you can start creating your own ideal conditions today.
Summary: What You Need to Know
- Like the weather conditions are often out of Your Control: Conditions are rarely static. Waiting for “perfect” can mean waiting forever.
- Adaptive Action beats Procrastination: If you can’t change the environment, you change how and when you show up.
- Leaders Create, They Don’t Wait: Your core role as a leader is to serve your team by building the environment they need to succeed.
What Mountain Weather Teaches Us About Action
I live up in the mountains of North Carolina, and if there’s one thing you learn quickly up here, it’s that mountain weather changes fast. Even when it isn’t shifting by the hour, the seasonal variations are intense.
In January and February, the dead of winter, it gets incredibly cold. In July and August, the heat and humidity can be brutal.
As an avid mountain biker, it would be easy for me to look out the window during those months and say, “Well, I’m not going to ride my bike for these four months of the year because the conditions are not quite right.”
Instead, I adapt:
- In the summer, I head out at 6:00 AM or 7:00 AM to ride right on sunrise. Or, I head out in the long, beautiful light of the evening with a light mounted to my helmet. The cool of the long light is refreshing.
- In the winter, I go out right in the middle of the day when the sun is high, the leaves are off the trees, and the forest is getting full sun.
The conditions are rarely “perfect.” But by adapting when and how I take action, I still get my moments.
The Danger of Deferral
When we say we are waiting for perfect conditions, we are essentially saying: “When my ship comes in, that’s when I’ll finally do these things.” But as leaders, we can’t afford to wait for our ship, especially if it never set sail in the first place.
When we kick decisions down the road, we fall into avoidance strategies. Often I see clients do this because it helps them feel safe exactly where we are, in that moment. Why change?
Other times, it’s driven by fear, fear of rejection, fear of failure, or even fear of success.
“We explain away why we made the decision to wait. But at the end of the day, deep down, we know what it really is.”
We call it “waiting for the right moment.” But the truth is, it’s procrastination wrapped in neat, justifiable excuses.
Shift Your Mindset: Create the Climate
Here is the real truth about leadership: Part of your role is to create the conditions that become perfect for your team. Remember, your job as a leader is to serve.
If you are waiting for the right relationships, the right connections, or the right opportunity, you aren’t proactively doing them in the first place. You create the ideal conditions by taking steps forward, even if those steps are small.
I once worked with a client who had a clear vision of who he wanted to be and the work he wanted to do.
That specific role didn’t exist in his company yet BUT instead of waiting for the company to change, we designed and built that space right where he was. It took time, and the final result looked a bit different than his initial blueprint, but he took action, and the work environment bent to meet him.
Your Challenge for Today
What is one area where you’ve been waiting for the right moment?
What have you been deferring or kicking down the road, hoping that one day the conditions would magically align?
Stop waiting! Take one small, decisive step in that direction today.
Those ideal conditions might not look exactly like what you imagined, but taking action will always move you closer to where you need to be.
Enjoy the journey.
